Shift Series Weekend

What a week it has been for Headlines! On Wednesday, I had the privilege of presenting the company to this year's Georgetown Compass Fellows. The new fellows asked questions about what it means to be an entrepreneur in college (answer: much fun, no sleep) and how to balance business, school, and life (answer: much fun, no sleep).

Now- and here comes the big news- as in really big, on the front page of HuffPo yesterday big.

Kenneth Cole has formed a partnership with Compass and has pledged $500,000! So, what does this mean for Headlines, and for you?

It means that Headlines is even more dedicated to reaching its fundraising goals. For exactly one-fivehundredth of what Kenneth Cole gave Compass, we can put Headlines in stores across America. Get the deets here! Ten seconds and ten bucks can make a world of difference.

Kenneth Cole talked to the conference attendees, including myself, about how fashion is the image we project to the world and that is why clothing is important. He's right- but with all due respect, he's missing a part of the truth.

Headlines operates on the premise that what you wear is first and foremost for you. How do you want to see yourself? This is a much easier question to answer than trying to figure out what other people want you to look like. For all of you lit majors out there, here's where things get paradoxical: Don't dress for other people, but by all means, make other people happy. The best way to do that? Be you! If you do your best work in polka dots, then get speckled and get going.

With that, please head on over to StartSomeGood and show some love for Headlines. Thanks!

Spring 2011 Update

Hi Headliners!

Lots of great things have been happening as we prepare to launch the company on a national scale.

First, our Lily scarf was featured in a fashion show! Strut for Smiles, a philanthropic production attended by hundreds in Bloomington, IN, included Headlines in their show.

Today, the official Headlines campaign launched on StartSomeGood.com! I'm not telling you what it is, so you have to click here to see it!

AND, as soon as we raise the necessary capital (have you gone to StartSomeGood yet? Go, go go!), Headlines will be launching a nationwide campaign. It's called Wear and Share Bracelets.

Picture a simple silver cuff bracelet. Now, picture someone handing you one to wear because you did something great. You put the bracelet on and notice a code engraved on the inside. You go the Headlines website and enter the code. Then, you tell us in a sentence or two what you did to earn the bracelet. (Now, your good deed is part of an online record of all the powerful happenings that make these bracelets move.) We hope you wear the bangle proudly! And we also hope that when you see another woman doing something wonderful, that you'll pass the bracelet on to her.

How cool would it be to create an invisible chain that links strong women together under the banner of creating positive change?

Answer: Very cool. It would be even cooler if these bracelets were available for purchase in boutiques, so you could start your own chain and see just how far smart women can take it. (Or hang on to it, or give as a gift- we won't tell!)

Please donate to our StartSomeGood campaign. And please keep thinking, working, dreaming, and doing! It's great to be a Headliner, and we're glad to have you with us.

Aaron Sorkin

Aaron Sorkin won a Golden Globe. Pretty cool! Aaron Sorkin used his Oscar speech to praise smart women. Very cool.

"Honey, look around- smart girls have more fun, and you're one of 'em!"

Time to take a page from Glen Coco's book and say YOU GO AARON SORKIN!

An Update to our Spring Line

Hello Headliners!

Whether you're cheering, weeping, or indifferent about tonight's Super Bowl, there's one thing we can all agree on: Spring cannot get here fast enough!

Our Spring Line is currently in production (as is actual Spring...come on, weather!) and will feature several different scarves plus pearl necklaces with punch- check out the online store! But not before you read this- our Spring messages that the scarves, and we hope you, will be wearing:

"Beauty and grace command the world." - Benjamin
"The only real elegance is in the mind." - Vreeland
"As a woman, my country is the whole world." - Woolf

What do you think? Tell us your favorites- and don't forget to send your friends to our facebook page and twitter :)

Middle East Update

Many Smart Women around the world have been following the news on the recent events in Tunisia, Egypt, Yemen, and Jordan. Check out this photo essay about women involved in the Egyptian protests. (Photo number ten is my favorite. I won't give it all away, but let's just say that a niqab can't hide a mother's hope for the next generation...grab your Kleenex!)

Also, there is a rumor going around that people have been holding hands around museums and cultural sites to protect them from looters. These people are risking their lives to stand guard over their cultural heritage- what a powerful display of love for country and for one another!

We hope for the safety and freedom of these men and women, and peace in the region they call home. We're glad to see their strength and passion for human rights making Headlines!

Corporate Social Reponsibility Wire

Hey Headliners!

That's right- CSRWire recently featured Headlines on its website! CSRWire is the leading online source for news about socially-sound businesses. We are honored to be included on their site!

The article was written for the Compass Partners Newsletter, but CSRWire picked it up.

The best part? I had no idea about the CSR shoutout until another Headliner posted it to our facebook page! (Thanks a million, SP!)

Welcome To Our New Blog!

December 2010

We hope you love it as much as we do. Now, let's kick off the blog - and the new year - with a recap of how far we have come. Our online store opened exactly 103 days ago. Since then, we have:

~ Counted MIT's Kappa Alpha Theta and Georgia Tech's Alpha Phi among our supporters

~Donated more than enough money to Room to Read to supply a library with games, puzzles, and toys (Headlining starts young!)

~Shared the front page of FastCompany's website with Mark Zuckerberg

~ Stretched from D.C. to places as diverse as Seattle (WA), Strongville (OH, and our favorite city name for sure!), Celebration (FL), and all over the Northeast

~ And now created this new website and blog!

Thank you for making all of this possible. Cheers to a new year full of learning, growth, and beauty all around us.
